FIRST MONUMENT TO GEORGE WASHINGTON NEAR U. S. 40, BUONSBORO, MD. The first Monument erected to the memory of George Washington is located on top of South Mountain. It was built July 4th, 1827. The original monument was gradually reduced to a state of near ruins over a period of years. In 1936 it was rebuilt and is now a Maryland State Park. It is reached by a splendid road leading from U.
