MATTITUCK BREAKWATER MATTITUCK Once Redmen walked across our fields, they gave our town its name"Big Creek"', Mat - ti - tuck in Indian talk, that name remains the same. Down Love Lane as we call it now the Indian braves have walked With frail canoes held overhead, to where the Creek is forked. From Sound to Town then back again these ceaseless waters flow Na - bi - achage, the Indians said, through"Gap in Hills"they go. The hills still stand as in the past when Captain Kidd was bold T'was here he lived so legend says, and thus our tale is told. G. L. R.
