POST CARD MARTHA WASHINGTON'S SITTING ROOM An interesting detail in this picture is the tiny, private staircase, seen through the open door in the back- ground. By these stairs, General Washington could mount from the library to his bedroom above, and avoid the company with which the house was always filled after his retirement from the Presidency. Mount Vernon is owned and maintained by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union, founded 1853 for the preservation of the home and tomb of Washington. 1934 MT. V. L. A. OF THE U.
