POST CARD THE TOMB OF WASHINGTON, MOUNT VERNON The Tomb was built in 1831 according to instructions in Washington's will. It was enlarged in 1837 to accommodate the two marble sarcophagi which were then provided for the remains of General and Mrs. Washington. Mount Vernon is owned and maintained by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union, founded 1853 for the preservation of the home and tomb of Washington. 1934 MT. V. L. A. OF THE U.
